Two children’s activity books, side by side on a charity shop shelf, 20 pence each. One from 2006, teaching boys to fight a bull, make a citizen’s arrest, stop a train with their bare hands. One from 2008, teaching girls to be pretty, get gum out of their hair, be the best cheerleader. I assumed they were a relic from the 1950s. They weren’t. Well withing my lifetime, and probably yours. I tore out their pages, laid them across the canvas, and painted the boy and girl those books would make. His side blue, hers pink, the colours we hand children before they can speak. And down the girl’s dress, in red, the names of 124 women and girls killed by men in the UK in a single year, taken from the Femicide Census. One child is being prepared for the world. The other is being prepared to be looked at while she stands in it. The first chapter and the last chapter of the same story. It starts young.
Every print is giclée printed on Enhanced Matte fine art paper, 200gsm, using archival pigment inks rated to last over 100 years. Museum-standard quality, made to be framed and lived with. Packaging made from recyclable cardboard, and paper from sustainable forests. Plastic kept out wherever possible. The work rages against a broken world. It shouldn't trash the planet getting to your wall.
