The Algorithm Never Got Arrested

Content note: this post references criminal charges of sexual offences, and violence against women including rape and killing. No details of any allegation are discussed here.

You'd have to have been living under a rock to not know who Andrew Tate is. He's been arrested. He denies everything, his lawyer says he's innocent, and a jury will decide.

This was never about the man in the cell.

He got arrested. The algorithm never did.

The accounts are still up. The clips are still spreading. The business model is still earning. And while he sat in a Miami courtroom, the feed was already telling millions of boys what to think about it. Witch hunt. Persecution. They're scared of him. His lawyer called the whole thing politically motivated, and within hours that was the story playing in a million bedrooms. The boys heard it before their parents had finished breakfast.

I have a son. He's fifteen. The exact age this machine was built to reach.

I don't hand him misogyny. Nobody in his life sits him down and tells him women are property. The phone does that for free. His school, to its credit, is fighting back: six weeks on misogyny in PSHE this year, because the government finally mandated it. He's in the first year that's ever had those lessons. The first year. Ever.

And we don't allow him social media. No Instagram. No TikTok. We hold that line every single day, against pressure you would not believe. He asks and asks. He gets grief at school for not being on it. It would be so much easier to give in, and we don't, and it still isn't enough. He watches it on his mates' phones anyway. I can't keep it from him, however hard I try, because the machine doesn't need his account. It just needs one phone in the room.

In 2024, researchers at Dublin City University set up blank phones registered as teenage boys and pressed go. Every single account was fed masculinist and anti-feminist content within 23 minutes. Not searched for. Delivered. I've written about that study before [LINK]. It's absolutely shocking: after two to three hours, more than three quarters of everything recommended was toxic.

And it worked. In 2023, Hope Not Hate found that 79% of boys aged 16 and 17 had watched, listened to or read Tate's content. 79%. More boys had consumed him than had heard of the Prime Minister. A man whose whole product was contempt for women reached more teenage boys than the man running the country.

The manosphere is the only business where getting arrested is good for sales. It doesn't cushion the consequence. It sells it. Consequences become content. Handcuffs become proof of the conspiracy the boys were always promised was coming. He doesn't need a verdict to win the feed. He just needs to be seen being pursued. Every hearing becomes an episode. The persecution story was written years before any arrest warrant was.

So no, this isn't a celebratory moment. It's barely a beginning, and every bit of it can still fall away while the algorithm keeps pumping. The machine that made him doesn't need him. If he vanished tomorrow it would build a new one by Friday, because the model works. Find a lonely boy. No. Not even a lonely boy. Any boy. Sell him an enemy.

And the enemy it sells him is your daughter. Mine is twelve. She'll walk into classrooms full of boys who were fed this stuff before any of them could legally open the account it arrived on. It makes me fucking furious. Not worried. Not concerned. Furious. Her classmates were recruited against her, for profit, before she'd finished primary school. Grown men got rich turning little boys against little girls, and the world called it content.

Because this content isn't just ugly. It's dangerous. Boys marinated in this grow into men, and we already know what some of those men do. They hit women. They strangle women. They rape women. They kill women. The pipeline doesn't end at a comment section. It ends at a front door.

My son's PSHE lessons started this year. Every generation of boys before him got nothing. Ten years of unfettered access to this poison, and those boys are men now, in workplaces and relationships and pubs and police forces. The education arrived a decade after the machine did. In July 2024, police chiefs declared violence against women and girls a national emergency. Two years on, I can't see it being treated like one. When a building's on fire, you put the flames out first and investigate later. Nobody stands in front of a burning building announcing a strategy. I am seriously concerned for our daughters, and we're pinning our hopes on lessons most boys already grew up without, delivered to kids who don't even know who the Prime Minister is, ffs.

But whatever a jury decides, the process itself matters. Whether untrained, randomly selected juries should be deciding sexual offence trials at all is a blog for another day, and I have serious doubts, but it's the system we've got, and it's turning. Women reported. Police investigated. Prosecutors charged. Two countries' legal machinery, moving slowly, in public, on the record. The feed can spin an arrest. It can't spin a transcript. Court happens in daylight, under oath, with everything written down. The algorithm has never once had to operate under those conditions. That's exactly why it's winning.

And at home? The answer isn't confiscating the phone. It isn't the government's shiny new midnight curfew either, the one teenagers can switch off themselves anyway. The machine needed 23 minutes, in broad daylight. It's faster than any ban, I promise you, I live it. The answer is getting there first. Talk to your son before the machine does. Tonight. Not a lecture. A question. Ask him what he's seen. Then don't flinch at the answer, because he's testing whether you can handle it. If you can't, he'll stop telling you.
